Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Wide Celebration

Jazz & Equality Closing Event featuring the Jewish Jazz quartet Sha’ar
Ahavas Sholom, the Jewish Museum of New Jersey, and NJPAC
145 Broadway, Newark, NJ 07104

Join us as we celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

This will be the closing event for “Equality,” the current exhibit at Ahavas Sholom and the Jewish Museum of New Jersey.  “Equality,” curated by Nelson Alvarez, showcases the artwork of artists with disabilities, who struggle both to create their art and to develop their careers.

As part of this celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., there will be a performance by the Jewish Jazz quartet Sha’ar, honoring the achievements of Dr. King and his constant fight for equality.

Sha’ar is Hebrew for “gateway,” a point of meeting where communities can comingle and cross-cultural meetings happen. The quartet explores the various Jewish musical traditions of its members.  They use these traditions to inform the music they play, in an attempt to create a musical language that is coherent and unique to the group, informed by jazz and global music.
